August 2020: Responding to COVID-19 through ShelterCare

A lot has changed since last year’s Friendship Dinner, where we launched our vision of ShelterCare.

Since then, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it new challenges – as well as new opportunities. House of Friendship’s Shelter program has moved to a hotel to provide the physical distancing needed to keep everyone safe. This, along with health-care supports, has led to early implementation of ShelterCare.

Many media outlets have captured this story:

Globe and Mail – Could shelter hotels be a model for addressing homelessness?

Waterloo Region Record: Kitchener hotel part of a better system for the homeless

CBC Kitchener: Kitchener men’s shelter looking for new home, funding so they can continue to serve homeless 24/7

Kitchener Today: ShelterCare allows people entering the shelter system to also have access to health care

October 2019: ShelterCare Vision Launched at the Friendship Dinner

At House of Friendship’s 24th Annual Friendship Dinner, held on Oct. 26, the vision for ShelterCare was shared with an enthusiastic audience at Lot 42. Housing Services Director Jessica Bondy and Executive Director John Neufeld invited community members to “join us at the table” to make the vision of ShelterCare a reality.

While John and Jessica were speaking, Maya Morton Ninomiya captured a graphic recording of the presentation highlights:
